Paid Leave benefits will start for Minnesotans on January 1, 2026.
Paid Leave is a new program launching for Minnesotans in 2026. It provides paid time off when a serious health condition prevents them from working.
Minnesota’s Department of Employment and Economic Development charged with implementing a paid family and medical leave program that operates with minimum friction and maximum impact.
Their mission is to improve the health and well-being of all people and businesses in Minnesota by delivering a paid family and medical leave program that:
- Provides financial support and job security for families and individuals during life’s crucial moments.
- Helps employers recruit, retain, and invest in their workforce.
- Builds strong partnerships with employers, providers, and community organizations.
- Creates a model for delivering equitable, transformative services.
What qualifying events could a worker use leave for?
- care for a family member with a serious health condition
- to bond with a new baby or child
- when their own serious health condition prevents them from working
- to support a family member called to active duty
- if they or a family member are facing a significant personal safety issue
Private Plan Rules
The commissioner, in consultation with the commissioner of commerce, must approve an application for private provision of the family benefit program.
